- Other Names: Polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 2 (EC 2.4.1.41) (Polypeptide GalNAc transferase 2) (GalNAc-T2) (pp-GaNTase 2) (Protein-UDP acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 2) (UDP-GalNAc:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 2) [Cleaved into: Polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 2 soluble form]
- Background: This gene encodes a member of the glycosyltransferase 2 protein family. Members of this family initiate mucin-type O-glycoslation of peptides in the Golgi apparatus. The encoded protein may be involved in O-linked glycosylation of the immunoglobulin A1 hinge region. This gene may influence triglyceride levels, and may be involved Type 2 diabetes, as well as several types of cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. - Function: catalytic activity:UDP-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine + polypeptide = UDP + N-acetyl-D-galactosaminyl-polypeptide.,cofactor:Calcium.,cofactor:Manganese.,domain:The ricin B-type lectin domain binds to GalNAc and contributes to the glycopeptide specificity.,domain:There are two conserved domains in the glycosyltransferase region: the N-terminal domain (domain A, also called GT1 motif), which is probably involved in manganese coordination and substrate binding and the C-terminal domain (domain B, also called Gal/GalNAc-T motif), which is probably involved in catalytic reaction and UDP-Gal binding.,function:Catalyzes the initial reaction in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, the transfer of an N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor. Has a broad spectrum of substrates for peptides such as EA2, Muc5AC, Muc1a, Muc1b. Probably involved in O-linked
