Dlx2a, or distal less homeobox two a, is a transcription factor that belongs to the Dlx family of homeodomain proteins. In zebrafish, Dlx2a plays a critical role in the development of the nervous system and craniofacial structures. It is particularly important for the differentiation and migration of neural crest cells, which give rise to a wide range of tissues including cartilage, bone, and peripheral neurons.

During embryogenesis, Dlx2a is expressed in the developing forebrain, pharyngeal arches, and olfactory placodes. It functions by regulating gene expression programs that control patterning and morphogenesis of the head and facial structures. Dlx2a is also involved in the formation of inhibitory neurons in the forebrain, contributing to the proper development of neural circuits.

Zebrafish Dlx2a is widely used as a molecular marker for neural crest cells and for studying the genetic pathways that underlie craniofacial development and neural differentiation. Because of its high conservation with mammalian Dlx genes, it is also valuable for modeling congenital disorders affecting the face and brain, and for investigating the regulatory networks that guide vertebrate head formation.
