Msh homeobox 1b (Msx1b) is a transcription factor belonging to the muscle segment homeobox (Msx) gene family, which is involved in the regulation of developmental processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), Msx1b plays a key role in craniofacial development, neural crest cell differentiation, and fin regeneration.
Msx1b is expressed during early embryogenesis in areas of active morphogenesis, such as the neural plate border, pharyngeal arches, and developing fin buds. It functions as a downstream effector of signaling pathways such as BMP, FGF, and Wnt, integrating these cues to regulate gene expression patterns during tissue patterning and regeneration. Notably, Msx1b expression is reactivated during appendage regeneration, making it a valuable marker for regenerative studies.
Zebrafish Msx1b is widely used in developmental biology to study neural crest cell fate, craniofacial patterning, and regenerative mechanisms, and provides a conserved model for understanding the genetic basis of congenital malformations and tissue repair.
