Ets variant 4 (Etv4), also known as Pea3, is a member of the ETS family of transcription factors characterized by a conserved ETS DNA-binding domain that recognizes purine-rich sequences in target gene promoters. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), etv4 plays an essential role in embryonic development, particularly in processes regulated by fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling.

Etv4 functions as a key downstream effector of FGF signaling pathways, mediating transcriptional responses critical for tissue patterning and organogenesis. During zebrafish embryogenesis, etv4 is expressed in a variety of dynamic domains including the posterior mesoderm, developing somites, neural crest, and the pronephros. It acts in concert with other Pea3 subfamily members such as Etv5 to regulate genes involved in cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation.

Zebrafish etv4 has been extensively studied in the context of limb and fin development, neuromast formation, and branchial arch morphogenesis, making it a useful molecular marker for FGF activity and mesenchymal-epithelial interactions. Disruption of etv4 expression or function impairs normal developmental processes, underscoring its regulatory importance.

Due to its conserved function and regulated expression, zebrafish Etv4 serves as a valuable model for studying ETS transcription factors in vertebrate development and disease pathways, including cancer metastasis and skeletal disorders.
