Stem cells are cells with the ability to self-renew and differentiate into various functional cells, such as cardiac cells, neural cells, and muscle cells, under specific conditions. Based on developmental stages, stem cells are divided into embryonic stem cells(ESCs) and adult stem cells. According to developmental potential, stem cells can be further classified into totipotent, pluripotent,and unipotent stem cells. Adult stem cells, based on different functions, can be further divided into neural stem cells,hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, skin stem cells, and adipose stem cells, among other types.
Stem cell markers are generally expressed in various stem cells and are commonly used to distinguish stem cells from other cells. Oct4 is one of the common markers of stem cells, playing an important role in maintaining the pluripotency and self-renewal of stem cells. Oct4 is mainly expressed in embryonic stem cells and germ cells, where it works with Nanog and SOX2 to form a
transcriptional network that expresses specific genes, thereby maintaining the self-renewal ability of stem cells and inhibiting excessive differentiation of stem cells. These genes are highly expressed during early tissue development and their expression decreases as the organism matures. In addition, CD30, GATA4, CD133, and others are also common markers of stem cells and are
very important in various physiological activities of stem cells.
