DNA methylation is an important form of epigenetic modification. In particular, covalent binding between cytosine's fifth carbon atom and the methyl group on genomic DNA is significant because it modifies cytosine to 5-methylcytosine (5mC). DNA methylation plays an important role in regulating gene expression, maintaining chromatin structure, gene imprinting, X chromosome inactivation, embryonic development, and other biological processes.
